I often scoff at how I used to be so terrified of failure... My perfectionist ruled my thoughts, my actions, and my entire existence. What I've come to realize after years of banging my head against a brick wall of perfectionism is: the only thing that counts is how you get back up after you've "failed."

Once you've decided that you're in it for good, this whole entrepreneurship thing makes you accept that you will fail. And every "failure" is a priceless lesson. Once you accept this truth, you will stop fighting so hard to be perfect. You will stop fighting so hard to go against the current. Fail, and fail fast. Fail as often and as quickly as you can. There is no greater teacher than failure.

Here are 10 recovery tools to get back up after we fall. Simple, immediately applicable, and works like a charm!

  1. Re-balancing my Kiva.org micro-lending portfolio... ie focus on others and your own "failure/lesson" will seems lighter

  2. Recite the The Serenity Prayer 100 times... ie accept the things you cannot change, change the things you can, and have the wisdom to know the difference

  3. Screaming into a pillow... ie release anger, disappointment, shame et al. from the body without neighbors calling the police

  4. Open every single window in your home or office... ie cleanse the air, get back into flow, and breathe. If you don't have any windows, it's time to move!

  5. Chug a liter of water, an entire liter... ie, it's harder than it sounds so it'll keep you focused elsewhere and it'll flush toxins from your body like nobody's business

  6. Dance in your underwear in the middle of the living room for 30min with the music pumped out loud... ie you became an entrepreneur to do what you want when you want it, you might as well do this too, right here, right now ;)

  7. Re-read client testimonials or request new client testimonials... ie focus on what you have done right and the positive impact you have had on others

  8. Shut off all electronics and meditate for 20min... ie get centered and grounded in silence, the gap between thoughts

  9. Prune plants while playing soft background music... ie clearing the dead stuff from your plants is therapeutically similar to clearing the dead stuff from your mind

  10. Put a movie, video clip or song that makes you cry and have an ugly cry... ie crying is not a sign of weakness, it's a delicious release to bring about the calm after the storm
